Description
“Sandhill Crane - Admiration” by Patti Deters. This Sandhill Crane (Antigone canadensis) struts and puffs out his chest feathers as if in admiration of himself as he gazes at his reflection in the shallow water. In reality, he is spreading his wings out wide to block the sun which helps him see into the marshy wetlands – making his foraging a bit easier. These prehistoric-looking waterfowl birds frequently have a rusty red spot on their heads, long beaks, tan gray feathers, and can be up to 4 feet tall.
