"The Pelican's Fish - Vertical" by Patti Deters. A herring gull (Larus smithsonianus) is finding disappointment as it challenged an American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) to a food fight over a small fish. The flight acrobatics of the gull were fun to watch as it would alternately dive and float in the air trying to distract the pelican. Found on the Mississippi River near Hastings, Minnesota, there was a large flock of these great white birds, probably migrating south.
