"Pelican on the River Watercolor" by Patti Deters. A lone pelican floats along on the wavy river as a larger flock of birds takes flight in the background. This is a Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) that I photographed in the wild, then created this wavy digital watercolor background for artistic effect. The bright sun and shoreline grasses are common elements in the nature landscape where pelicans can be found. Although these large white water birds appear awkward when on land, they are graceful and beautiful when in flight and can fly for an entire day and night going up to 300 miles without rest.
