Description
"Vulture at Monument Valley" by Patti Deters. This Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) is perched on a dead driftwood tree, bleached by the sun at Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, Arizona. This area in the southwest USA is not officially designated as a National Park since it sits within the Navajo Nation Reservation along the Arizona-Utah border, but is every bit as stunning and majestic. Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures are frequently confused because they look so similar - you can tell this one is a Black Vulture because there is no red on the head. Both species are sometimes referred to as condors, black buzzards, or just plain buzzard. This particular bird was seen elsewhere and composited onto the branch. The ancient geological rock formations in the background are framed within the bleached branches of the desert driftwood tree. Desert scrub dots the sandy ground. Interesting fact: Vultures and condors are scavengers that are often included with other types of raptors or birds of prey despite traditionally being scavengers and hunting for their food.
