Description
"Ice Storm on the Cumberland River" by Patti Deters. After a winter ice storm, trees and bushes are covered in ice and reflected in the still backwaters of the Cumberland River. The plants and foliage glow and sparkle, especially in the morning light set against the blue water and blue sky. This beautiful winter (although sometimes early spring or late autumn) phenomenon is known as ice glaze and can actually be dangerous if too much ice and weight accumulate on the branches. But when it does occur, it's as if the world turned into a fairytale crystal ice palace. The Cumberland River is almost 700 miles long, and this particular spot was seen in Kentucky, between Eddyville and Kuttawa at GPS 37°4'2.5788N- 88°6'4.6584W.
