Description
"Prairie Dog Portrait - Splatter" by Patti Deters. Prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies (aka towns) are found only in North America, generally in desert-like environments. This alert little creature was acting as lookout - prairie dogs communicate with a variety of warning barks and squeaks that signal different types of predators. This one is from South Dakota and is the black-tailed species, noted by its light brown tan color and short black tipped tail. These small chubby animals are related to squirrels, and are known for having a complex vocabulary language that can identify very specific dangers, even the color of clothing worn by different humans! Though obviously smart and social, they are considered wildlife pests by ranchers. Prairie dogs are mainly herbivorous, although they will eat insects. They do not eat is meat but prairie dogs frequently hunt and kill other animals that are viewed as rivals or threats. This portrait is in a vertical crop with splatter texture background.
