"Prairie Dog Portrait - Splatter" by Patti Deters. Prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies (aka towns) are found only in North America, generally in desert-like environments. This alert little creature was acting as lookout - prairie dogs communicate with a variety of warning barks and squeaks that signal different types of predators. This one is from South Dakota and is the black-tailed species, noted by its light brown tan color and short black tipped tail. These small chubby animals are related to squirrels, and are known for having a complex vocabulary language that can identify very specific dangers, even the color of clothing worn by different humans! Though obviously smart and social, they are considered wildlife pests by ranchers. Prairie dogs are mainly herbivorous, although they will eat insects. Hi! My artwork is photography of all things nature, especially wildlife, flowers, and landscapes. Many of the flowers and wildlife images are from my local area around Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Others are from photo trips taken with my husband of 40+ years. Some of the images are what I like to call "documentary art" - that is, I capture the best photos from wherever I am and then enhance them - sometimes a little, sometimes a lot - to make my own kind of "real life" art. Other images are more digital and simple, and those tend to portray the softer side of nature.
