Description
"Muscari Butterfly" by Patti Deters. A bright iridescent Blue Morpho butterfly rests lightly on a blooming muscari. These pretty blue butterflies are some of the largest and most striking you can find. The sparkling and shiny blue color is actually something called structural color and appears blue because refracted light hides all the other colors. The muscari flower is a bulb and also known as grape hyacinth. These little spring ephemerals are easily identifiable when they bloom by the tight clusters of tiny bells that smell like grape juice, although you have to get low to the ground to catch the fragrance. This vertical image with gray bokeh background is a composite image - it would be rare indeed to see a Blue Morpho on a muscari bulb flower.
