Description
"Pyrrhuloxia Looking at Camera" by Patti Deters. This small yet striking desert cardinal is a Pyrrhuloxia (cardinalis sinuatis) and is a resident of the mesquite groves Tucson, Arizona. These pretty songbirds are omnivores, meaning they eat insects, seeds, and berries. Pyrrhuloxia look a bit like their cousin, the northern Cardinal; males are grey with lots of red coloring on the tall crest, face, breast, and tail. This particular male bird was was quite skittish and shy, but I was lucky enough that he did stop for a few seconds to look directly at the camera.
