Description
"Mallard Hen Eating a Snail III" by Patti Deters. This wild female Mallard (Anas platyrhyncos) duck spent several minutes working on swallowing this huge snail, shell and all! Ducks are omnivores and commonly forage for tasty snails and slugs as well as insects and pond vegetation - whatever they can find. It was amazing to see how wide she could open her mouth and how her tongue helped keep the snail in place.
