Description
"Immature Bald Eagle - Talons" by Patti Deters. This American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is eating a fish she has caught through a hole in the ice at Fort Snelling State Park in Minnesota. She has massive yellow feet with huge talons that are used to grab and carry prey, or pull up a fish through a hole in the ice. Although basically the same, birds of prey have talons while other animals have claws. Mammals, reptiles, and other non-birds of prey use claws to climb, dig, and capture prey but do not carry or transport prey with their claws - they tend to carry things with their mouths and beaks. Both talons and claws are made of keratin which is a hard protein that also makes human hair. This particular eagle is probably around 3 years old and will come into traditional coloring around 5-6 years of age.
