"Baby Night-crowned Heron - Stare Down" by Patti Deters. Two young Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) birds show their juvenile speckled plumage as they stare at each other amidst the dense greenery of an evergreen tree. Their sharp beaks and piercing eyes are captured in detail as they seem to be engaging with one another among the branches. Fun fact: Social by nature, these birds will nest in colonies with herons and egrets, and will sometimes even raise the other species’ offspring! Photographed in Fergus Falls, Minnesota.
