Description
"Gilded Flicker Reflection" by Patti Deters. Gilded Flickers are permanent residents in southern Arizona and can be found around Tucson in Saguaro National Park near where this lone bird was seen at a reflecting pool, perched on a stone rock seeming to admire his reflection in the serene body of water. The flicker's confident pose exudes a sense of grace and poise, while its clear reflection creates a lovely visual symmetry. Gilded Flickers are not as conspicuous as the more common Gila Woodpeckers, and if you don’t recognize their unique piercing cry, you might never even know they were even out there in the desert. They mainly forage on the ground for ants which doesn’t make them any easier to find. Gilded Flickers consume more ants than any other North American bird––their tongues can extend a full 5 inches to probe anthills!
