Description
"Winter Cattails" by Patti Deters. This garden of snow-covered cattails (Typha latifolia) is actually a small marshy area that is full of the tall brown grass-like plants. Cattails grow in water-logged areas and can be found in marshes and bogs everywhere. Also known as broadleaf cattail, Bulrush, or cat-o'-nine-tails, these spiky plants are effective at absorbing pollutants and is sometimes used as a bioremediator (the process for naturally removing environmental pollutants from air, water). This small field patch of cattails was found in a rural northern Minnesota countryside and looks particularly pretty as a monochrome with the fresh snow clinging to the brown heads of the cat tails.
