Description
"U. S. Geological Survey Reference Mark VA 7890" by Patti Deters. Geological survey markers are objects, generally round brass discs, that are placed in marking major survey points on the earth’s surface. Civil engineers record location and elevation (orthometric height) measurements, which are then used to create accurate maps based on other points that reference the marker. Survey markers are used in geodetic and land surveying. A benchmark is a type of survey marker that indicates elevation (vertical position). Horizontal position markers used for triangulation are also known as triangulation stations. If you come across these markers, be aware it is a misdemeanor to intentionally remove or destroy these permanent survey markers.
