Description
"Corn Tower in Rochester MN" by Patti Deters. This ear of corn tower is all that is left from the Reid, Murdoch, and Co. food cannery, which opened in 1929. In 1948, the cannery was purchased by Libby Foods, and then by Seneca Foods in 1982 which finally closed the plant in 2018. The tall tower resembles a husked ear of corn, aka corn on the cob, and stands near Graham Park in the city of Rochester, Minnesota. It was originally built to represent one of the two main vegetables processed in this industrial area. It's actually a water tower which provided water for the canning operations. In 2019, Olmsted County purchased the property and demolished the factory canning buildings, but the historic water tower remains as an agricultural Americana photo op.
