Description
"South American Sea Nettle" by Patti Deters. This South American (Chrysaora plocamia) is seen floating and swimming as if doing acrobatic dance routine. One of the most striking things about this image is the way the jellyfish's long, delicate tentacles are arranged around its body. They seem to flow and sway in the water, almost like they're dancing. Sea nettles have an orange semi-transparent hat-shaped body, about one foot wide, that expands and contracts when swimming. It has 24 hair-like tentacles and four “oral arms” that range from 3-10 feet in length which help catch and digest prey. The tentacles and oral arms are lined with poison that will kill or paralyze predators and prey. Though not deadly to humans, if stung, humans will usually develop a painful rash. These Jellyfish are carnivores and also will eat other Jellyfish, making them cannibals as well. South American sea nettles live in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and can often been seen in the summer where they live near the warm surface waters. This particular Jelly was photographed at an aquarium zoo, and presented here with a vertical crop.
