Description
"Prairie Dog Family" by Patti Deters. Prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) colonies (aka towns) are found only in North America. This alert family of four was photographed in South Dakota and is the black-tailed species, noted by it light brown tan color and short black tipped tail. These small chubby animals are related to squirrels, and are know for having a complex vocabulary language that can identify very specific dangers, even the color of clothing worn by different humans! Prairie dogs are mainly herbivorous, although they will eat insects. They do not eat is meat but prairie dogs frequently hunt and kill other animals that are viewed as rivals or threats. A splatter texture with white background was used for artistic expression.
