Description
“Great White Egret Plumage #2” by Patti Deters. Fantastic plumage and eye color make these birds a treat to observe in the spring during courtship, mating, and nesting season. Long feathery breeding plumage (aigrettes) grows from its back, and part of the skin on its face turns a bright neon green which give these birds a beautiful fairy tale look. It’s the aigrettes that almost caused Ardea alba egretta to become extinct in the late nineteenth century as they were hunted for female hat decorations - which in turn sparked conservation efforts and some of the early laws to protect these wild avian waterfowl.
