Description
“Great Blue Heron Watercolor Reflection” by Patti Deters. This Great Blue Heron (GBH) 'Ardea herodias' was flying flying close to the shoreline with the still water of the lake creating an almost perfect reflection. He was collecting sticks to bring back to his partner for spring nest-building. While nesting, GBH gather in colonies often in swamps or marshes. GBH tend to settle near eagles because of mafia-like protection – predators are scared off by the eagles, even though they prey on some of the herons. GBH are the largest North American heron, with slate blue gray feathers, a white head, and yellow orange beaks. These skittish water birds are generally found alongside rivers, ponds, and lakeshores. They can also be seen in flight as they gracefully soar high in the sky with wings flapping and their neck tucked into their shoulders, as can be seen in this image. This art piece is presented on a hand painted textured watercolor background in a square crop.
