Description
"Egret Butterfly Surprise" by Patti Deters. A Great White Egret (Ardea alba) appears to be surprised by the butterfly as it flits past the large tree log where the egret has perched. These large white birds do not eat Monarchs, but it looks as if that is exactly what is about to happen! These waterfowl generally forage by wading along the edges of rivers, streams, and lakes and will eat bugs occassionally. Sometimes called a great white heron, these birds can stand up to three feet tall and have wingspans of up to 67". They are a beautiful example of avian wildlife and this particular image is presented on a black background.
